Our main service is to provide primary schools in Chester with trained volunteers to work with the children who need more individual time to help with their reading and encourage their interest in learning generally. Many of the children that we work with lack basic skills that are often acquired through play in the early years. Even speech and communication can be quite poor and basic things like concentration, listening, problem solving and memory are often not as good as their peers. Our approach is to provide the children with half hour sessions based around their own interests and motivations so no two sessions look quite the same. Our volunteers go in once or twice a week and always work with the same children to enable them to get to know that child’s needs and form a strong and consistent relationship. The children absolutely love the time that we give them because many of them are starved of positive adult attention. The results are always good and sometimes life changing.
We provide a full day’s training before you go into school that includes Safeguarding Children in your role as a 1:1 volunteer. We have regular volunteer meetings that everyone is invited to and coffee mornings in all our areas to enable us to get together with small groups to see how people are getting on. Each area also has a Volunteer Manager who comes into school to bring bespoke resources and offer help and advice as required.
