Friendship with a purpose to help residents grow in confidence and take control of their own lives. Residents are encouraged to develop their independence to support them to move back into the community and move into their own accommodation. Befrienders will support them on their journey and help them build up their confidence, make decisions, gradually increase control of their lives and make steps to being independent. Befrienders support them to achieve small steps, acknowledge their achievements and encourage them along the way. You are a friend or buddy, helping them to become independent with a goal of helping them move to their own accommodation.
You need to be dependable and reliable, non-judgemental and have an understanding of people's concerns and anxieties while making changes to their lives. You will support and be patient and you can continue that support when they move to their own accommodation. This is a role that will give you the skills and experience needed for the care and social services sector or for FE and HE courses.
Befrienders need to be good communicators and have excellent people skills. A knowledge of learning disabilities or mental health issues and community issues would be useful. Able to support and coach on a one to one basis. Non-judgemental. Friendly personality and reliable.
